What is the point of the little door on the inside of a dishwasher which flaps open and shoots the dishwasher tablet into the machine? Why are we deemed incapable of throwing the tablet in ourselves?

Now some of you are being a little sarcastic - for your info, my dishwasher releases the tablet as soon as the cycle starts. So there. Less of the blonde comments

the reason is that the dishwasher goes through a controlled cycle, normally a rinse first to get rid of all the loose food scraps etc, then it pumps out this water, after that it takes in clean water (either hot or cold depending on your machine) it then checks the water temperature and ensures that it is hot enough before it opens the little door to release the cleaning agent, in your case the tablet, it then goes on to do a complete wash cycle at this high temperature which totally cleans the dishes, once this wash cycle is finished it then pumps out the hot dirty water, and then goes into a hot rinse cycle and then onto a hot drying cycle,
so as you can see it is complicated to work out exactly when to throw in the cleaning agent and the machine makers have made it easy for you by designing a programme for your machine to release the detergent at the optimum time for your machine to do its job properly.

Tablet? What tablet? I use a liquid. The door keeps the detergent for the main wash cycle from getting into the pre-wash cycle. The dish with out the lid empties first, to soak the dirty dishes. Then it rinses, and the little door opens for the main wash cycle.

Maybe your dishwasher is broken ?
I checked ours, so no guessing here... The machine starts and sprays all the plates then rests for a few minutes and sprays again. After that i opened the main door, the little one was still closed. So ours rinses before it releases the soap.

Presumably it's so it can release it once the jets are at full pressure to enable even distribution but if you want to just sling the tablet in, go right ahead, it's your dishwasher.

Because it rinses the dishes before it washes them so the tablet is dispensed at a later time in the wash.

It doesn't release the tablet or powder straight away.
