It depends on where you work and they usually tell you whether you have to work on not in the employee handbook. There isn't anything you can do about it. Sorry!

It's a "federal" work place legal holiday. Private business, state colleges and universities, etc. can (and many do) remain open. So the answer to your question depends on where you work exactly. Federal employees have the day off and their offices will be closed - but the rest of us will be still going to class and working the ol' 9-5.

For some businesses it is a holiday and for some it isn't. I have to work tomorrow but state and government agencies are closed. My mom works for the state and so do my husband and mother-in-law. They are all off. Postal workers and bank employees are also off. Your employer is not entitled to give you the day off so there are no legal documents stating so.

it is not a work place holiday...i think that the mail even runs..it is just a day for kids to be out of school..on a day that they dont even know what it is!

It is a Federal holiday and most schools are closed. It is up to the individual employer as far as making it a holiday for their company.

If you are in America, there is no law that says you get any days off. If your company is closed, you don't work. I will be at work tomorrow, but that's not the end of the world as far as I'm concerned..

I think it should be a "work place" holiday, but my boss never let us off (i'm not currently enployed), told us "he did not know him" so why close down? So, does that mean he knew Santa Clause, or the Easter Bunny?
