This information came directly from the IRS' web site:

Why Pay Taxes? "The Truth About Frivolous Tax Arguments" responds to some of the more common frivolous "legal" arguments made by individuals and groups who oppose compliance with the federal tax laws. These arguments are grouped under six general categories, with variations within each category. Each contention is briefly explained, followed by a discussion of the legal authority that rejects the contention. A final section explains the penalties that the courts may impose on those who pursue tax cases on frivolous grounds.

The real law (Title 26 USC) , once you get through the fine print smokescreen, says that if you are a citizen of one of the 49 states (excluding Washington D.C.) receiving "compensation for labor" the income tax is voluntary, based on voluntary assessment and voluntary compliance. However, once you file, you have "volunteered" for good. They don't tell you that. If you can find an employer (very first job) that will allow you to work without signing a W-4 withholding certificate, and then you never sign an annual "filing" you are "not subject to or a party to the tax" . (old U.S. Supreme Court decision).
Ya gotta be real careful though... one signature on any IRS form at any time and you have been considered to have "volunteered" till you die. All part of a very clever congressional scheme to bilk trillions pf $ from citizens legally out of congressional jurisdiction by using obscure civil law (Uniform Commercial Code).

Every few days someone posts this question.....

Yes, there is a law that you have to pay taxes assuming that your income is over the minimum requirements.

Title 26 - Internal Revenue Code.

The people that say there isn't are called "Tax Protesters" and not one of them has ever prevailed in court. It would be best to avoid these people.
