The passenger pigeon, ectopistes migratorius, was a different genus from the rock pigeon which is a menber of the world wide genus Columba. All pigeons had the same ancestor a few million years ago but it is unlikely that the passenger pigeon evolved from the rock pigeon. There are members of the Columba genus in America and it would be more likely that the passenger pigeon was more closely related to them than to a European pigeon.

The rock pigeon is now on every continent as it is the common domestic/feral/homing pigeon.

Supposedly, it is the ROCK PIGEON which is NOT extinct and lives in the Mediteranean. See this link: http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.CFPage?mode=article&objectID=28853
