Steps for Changing a System Icon:

BEFORE YOU BEGIN!
Right-Click your desktop and choose "Properties". Then follow the steps below.

1. Click on the "desktop" tab at the top of the Display Properties window.
2. Then click the "Customize Desktop" button.
3. A Desktop Items window will open. Choose the "General" tab.
4. From the display of system icons, click on the icon you want to change making sure it's highlighted.
5. Click on the "Change Icons" button. This will allow you to browse your computer for the icon you want to use as a replacement for your System Icon. (remember to click "OK" and "Apply Changes" once you have chosen a new icon).

I second the previous answer, with an addition. Go find IconEdit32 as freeware. Make up your own icons that mean something to you.

If you want a new icon for a standard Windows item, like an Excel file, you can't do it at all. What you do instead it to make a "shortcut" to your file and change the icon for that.

You can also use IconEdit32 to cook up icons for your Web site. Just store your icon in the root directory (along with "index.html") with the exact name "favicon.ico". It will now appear at the left of your site name in the browser address bar and on the tab for each page. Neat, huh? Its how all the commercial people put their logo up.
