I've watched the first set, and most of the second (got pretty irritated with the voice switch)

Is anything ever answered? I loved the first season, the second not so much. The mysery about the gods/heading west.....does it ever really come together?

No, unfortunatly they still have NOT yet reached the west, in the manga or in the anime. Seems that some authors of popluar series such as Saiyuki and Inuyasha enjoy dragging out their stories for a long time and making their fans wait to see the conclusions of their stories. Now, it is true that another OVA (animated short serires) for Saiyuki is being created right now, but they have confirmed that is is about the main characters' pasts and not a continuation of the story. So anime wise, no, they haven't reached it and seems unlikely they will, manga wise, they also haven't but is your best bet to follow to see if they eventually do.

They still have not reached the West at the end of Saiyuki Relad Gunlock (third in the Saiyuki saga). Gunlock is over in Japan, but there are unconfirmed rumors of a 4th series in the mix.
