I had to call a certain tow truck company to pick up my car and I was told by the driver when they got there (almost half-an-hour later than I was told) that it would cost $50 JUST TO HOOK UP MY CAR, and then I would be charged $5 per mile: I think that's highway robbery!! What do you think?

$50 is normal.

$5 per mile is a little excessive. You need to understand that when the tow truck comes out to get you they pay for the gas to get there. Than they take you where you need to go and need to get back to where they came from.

You tow covers the price of gas for the the trip to you, the trip to the place to drop the car off, and the gas for the trip back to the place they came from.

$5 is a little expensive but the insurance and other expenses make it an expensive business to run.

Nope, this is pretty average. I think the lowest I have ever had a tow for is about $40 dollars but that was several years ago. Now the $5 a mile part is highway robbery. It should be a 1 flat fee as long as you are not going more than 15 minutes away or so.

No, it's not a bad deal, but the $5 per mile, if I were, I would call other tow truck services and find out how much they charge. Make sure you still have your receipt, if need be speak to an attorney about the charges.

It also depends on how many miles. I had my car towed from from house to Pep Boys last year and it was $55. I called Pep Boys and they sent a tow truck over.
Yours sounds like it could be expensive if you had a long distance for them to take it.

Nope, that sounds about normal. I recently purchased Geico insurance and had a flat tire about two weeks later. I called Geico roadside assistance and they sent someone within the hour. That could not get my spare tire off and they left. I called Geico back and they contacted the same guys and they towed me to a service station where my tire was fixed. This was at no cost to me and I'm thankful that I had Geico. Not sure if you have car insurance, but I would recommend them.

Get AAA-they offer 4 free tows a year within a 25 mile radius.

I think what you're asking is, can I force them to pay for the damages? I doubt any lawyer would take your case, since they work on a contigency basis, and the cost of tracking this down would be more than they can make. At best, you would get what, $1000? Your lawyer would get $333. Another option would be small claims court. Or Judge Judy. Or make an insurance claim (if you had full coverage) and let the insurance company track them down. The only way to really get any money out of it is to get a judge to agree with you and order them to pay.

Actually that's about right. My car has had a lot of problems lately and I chose not to use up my AAA calls. It has been costing $45.00 for a tow, and this is Maine where things cost less than other places.

If you think that's high, try parking illegally - it shoots up to over $100.00!

going rate and an appointment with a tow truck is not set in stone. they are going on call after call, so it depends on how long it takes, how much the person bugs them, etc and that slows them down.

that big truck, operator back at base, the fuel, the mechanics, etc...not cheap to run a tow truck.

Here in Indiana the going rate is $65 hook-up and $2 a mile. So I'd say you're ok.
