Ha! I knew it would come in handy! It's not a lump, it's an alligator penis, but yeah, for 100% determination whether a gator is male or female, you go feeling around for what you're looking for. BUT.......
Female gators typically top out at about 7 feet or so, males are the ones that get huge. Bone structure and muscle build is much larger in a male than in a female, basically males have bigger skulls and look more "masculine".
Not that I am encouraging anyone to pick up an alligator, but typically, when a gator over 4 feet long or so is picked up, if it is a male.... hmmm... how to put this politely.......... things don't necessarily stay nicely packed.... i think that'll do.
