Traditional servers allow a group of computers to run in collaboration with one another - sharing files, programs, storage space, and printers.

Newer servers provide additional features and benefits relevant to today's business needs. In particular, a server facilitates improved Internet and email access, data protection, and helps reduce the amount of paper in your office - all of which are important for the smooth running of most small and medium sized businesses.

in layman's terms a server would be a computer that is dedicated to serve a specific function. for instance there are file severs, DHCP servers, video servers, domain controllers, database servers, etc.

they help to provide fault tolerance in a network. if you have one computer that provides all necessary services to the network when it goes down (and they all do) nobody can get any work done.
