What are her interests ? Try to find something she would like to cherish...
Also it depends how much you wish to spend ?
A painting or a print which would be a lovely present for her 44th birthday ..but if you wish to present her with the usual stuff ...perfumes , cosmetics which will soon evaporate into thin air...you follow me I hope , I would abstain from.
I would prefer to offer her something that she would cherish for long and that would remind her of your loving attitude for long.
Something for the kitchen, a book, Cd's or DVDs which are to her taste of course ...+ if you wish to invite her over dinner at home ,if you happen to cook good food she likes.
Happy Birthday to your friend and enjoy yourselves much. Be sure to keep your friend for a long long time ...a good friend is hard to find and is a treasure to relish upon!

We kinda need a little more info! Is she married, single, divorced? What does she like? Does she have kids? But without much to go on I'd say get her a gift card to one of her favorite stores and the 2 of you go shopping together~ then take her out for a birthday lunch, your treat!
