my friend's baby is 4 1/2 months old and is having problems pooping. He is a hungry boy so she has started weaning him and he's had baby rice and some pureed fruit and veg. He doesn't like drinking water. Any advice on what she can do to help her baby. he strains for ages and nothing comes out.

with hope this makes you laugh...

We had the same problem and decided to take the little on to the doctor.
Dr pulled out a contraption that was going to have to go up little ones bottom and then, as if by magic the "heavens" opened.

he pooped and pooped for 5 minutes - the doctor had to, politly leave the room and use another office because of the smell.

mmm...

Stop giving commerically made rice cereal and either a) buy something like all natural oat bran or b) make her own using rice and a blender (brown rice is more nutritious). Commercial rice cereal has synthetic iron in it and that will only make constipation worse and it is generally unneeded. Also commercial cereal is full of other junk.

I must be tired because I'm not even going to say something about the fact that 4 months is too early for solids. Maybe I have just given up.

First of all Hungry baby should give FORMULA MILK FOR HUNGRIER babies.
when people start weaning, most of the babies face constipition. Its very natural.Tell ur friend to give very little amount at first.
Then mashed Banana, prune juice with water...can help the constipation.
As the baby doesnt like water, try to give him flavoured water(strawberry/peach/blackcurrent...which is found in boots). And also try to make the water a bit warm when u will give him.
And if everythg fails, then make the formula milk a little watery.
Farley's strawberry yougart( from 4 months) is also good.
If she pooh's once in three days...its normal.
Everythg will be alright as the time passes.Dont worry.just keep trying.
best wishes for ur friends baby.

Ok...is the baby on Cow and gate milk? The green box?
This is so rich and constipates babys quite alot.
If not buy some fresh orange juice and water it down quite a bit and give in a bottle.I would say about 4oz every 3 hours or so.
If not get the baby to take it from a teaspoon neat.
Tell your friend to contact the babys health visitor as his formula milk may be unsuitable for him.
Get in touch if you need to

be careful, simply by fact water can drop his sodium point and which would be VERY risky. you relatively would desire to talk this which includes your document. in case you have a PPO perhaps make an appt. to work out a Pediatric Gastroenterologist. i chanced on mine via baby's medical institution in Washington,DC. additionally, my First and third born toddlers had themes with constipation, simply by certainty they have been allergic to the formulation. My oldest exchange into breastfed until 4mos. and after that he experienced constipation simply by fact he exchange into alllergic to the soy formulation. My 2d exchange into born 36 wks and 5 days and had a minor constipation concern. The pediatrician stated me to grant him "toddler Lax" while he gave the impression to be uncomfortable. I purely had to grant it to him some circumstances and he exchange into fantastic. Now, with my third he has a milk and soy hypersensitive reaction and is on a formulation talked approximately as Neocate. The allergist and/Gastro the two reported that considering he exchange into allergic to the formulation he exchange into on at delivery, it brought about his intestines to swell and that's the reason he gets constipated. i'm uncertain in case your son could have a similar themes or not, that's why that's appropriate to take him to the well being care provider's place of work. it is likewise conceivable this may be his habitual. some toddler's purely bypass their bowls each few days, yet while she is rather irritable and looks to be uncomfortable, website your ped. and ask them what you will desire to do. to not sound like a hypocrite, yet sometimes you will desire to get a 2d medical opinion or shop on with your guy or woman "mommy/daddy" instinct and ask relating to the toddler lax. you ought to purchase it from CVS. I choose you all of the appropriate and sturdy success!

my son had the same problem, but it started earlier, I was told by my doctor to give him some baby apple prune juice, as much as he'd drink. It can take up to 24 hours but it does work. If that doesnt get it moving you can go to the store and buy glycerin suppositories. Use one and it'll work in about 20 minutes. Don't use them very often otherwise the baby can get dependant on them, but ask your doctor first.
Good luck.

I hope he is still taking formula, because that should be the primary source of nutrition for the first 12 months.

try prunes or pear juice
also call the DR and ask about using Milk of Magnesia

Banana is good for Diarrhea, Not constipation

provided you're not avoiding dairy you could also try giving him prune yoghurt. otherwise anything citrus or very high in vit c, so orange juice etc. when weaning my babe (now 18months old) i used to mix up innocent smoothies with baby rice to give her different flavours. they do a couple of high vit c ones which might help.

I do remember my midwife telling me that it was normaly for babes to go for days without pooing (provided they are breastfed, I don't know about bottle i'm afraid)
