I read a book a long time ago about a Russian hero who's just a regular guy. I can't think of the title. It involved a long journey, and there's a girl on the journey too, and the hero is always saving the day...watching out for her like a big brother.
He ends up getting captured by bad guys like gypsies or something, who torture him by putting an extremely hot, bright piece of metal near his face and it supposedly blinds him. The girl then thinks he's blind and they continue their epic journey, this time with her leading him by the hand. The journey is so long and tedious that her feet become bloodied, but she toughs it out without a word, thinking he can't see her suffering. It turns out he wasn't blinded, so he saw her sticking it out the whole time. Then in the end, she finds out he can see, and they make it to wherever they were going, and they live happily ever after.
What's the title?
