they used sacajawea, she was kidnapped from her tribe and sold to a frenchman. she saved them when a tribe tried to kill the expedition, it turns out it was her tribe from before she was kidnapped

Sacagawea and her French canadian husband,accompanied Lewis and Clark as translators. Lewis and Clark met up with some Shoshones later,one was Sacagaweas brother,,The Shoshones provided the expidition with food and horses.They also advised about the best route to take over the rockies.

the Indigenous People had developed a universal non - verbal form of communication called " sign language " in which hand gestures were used to mean various things. this communication allowed different tribes to communicate very well with each other even when their languages prevented speech. the sign language to communicate with deaf people is a modern adaptation of the Indigenous People sign language.
