Organism lives in water
Organism dies and floats to bottom
It gets covered with silt
It gets covered with LOTS more silt
EONS pass
Pressure of silts and temperature of earth replace all the organic matter with minerals from the silt.
Water may or may be gone by now
Tectonic plates of earth move
Mountains form (the silt layer your organism in is pushed up into a mountain)
Time goes by and erosion
Man comes by and digs
Finds little fossil in rock - gets excited
Researches the rock structure to determine to age of the rock that the fossil came from - and determines when your organism lived (approx)

Fossils are the remains or traces of once living organisms. They only form in sedimentary rocks through processes of burial and then lithification of the rock.
You can find then anywhere and they provide brilliant evidence to support the theory of evolution.
They date back to over a billion years ago.
They can be dated and then used as index fossils when they are found elsewhere to help date the rocks in different localities.

They are beautiful, beautiful, beautiful and super itneresting!!! Check out the PRI (Paleontological Research Institute) website for more information on fossils. They are real neat!

Good god girl! Do you have any idea how big a subject paleontology is?!

Fossils can form in many different ways and they can show an number of things about the past environemtn, evolution and general prehistoric life.
