America USED to be the best, however, its society is crumbling and things are getting worse and worse here. We have a healthcare crisis nationwide, a HUGE illegal immigration issue, deteriorating family values, government governing our lives and our children as a result, major racial problems, and arrogantly egocentric individuals that place more value on material things than they do their own children.
America also used to be the leader in the business world and Europe is now on the fast track to superseding us. Our country is in crisis yet no one can see it because they all still think that "America is the best place to live"....they are usually blinded by patriotic ignorance and denial.
Oh...and the education system is extremely lacking as well.
Bless the teachers that are shaping our next generation, they have a tough job cut out for them!!!

Interesting question, too bad you asked not wanting a real answer. Your question is really rhetorical in the sense that you've already made up your mind. Unfortunately, anyone else who might have wanted an honest discussion probably won't find it here (given the nature of some of the other respondents to your tilted question). That said, I think you still deserve at least a few decent answers (which some of the other respondents have also provided).
Our country is one of the few actually founded on the idea of a welcoming society with equal opportunity for representation and success. This does not mean that everyone is guaranteed success, just that the opportunities are there and that it's up to the individual to exercise their own initiative. America hasn't always been so welcoming to everyone, but unlike other countries, we've recognized this and make honest efforts to improve. This equality in representation and the freedoms that have become protected and codified are part of what makes America so great. Consider the raging debates that occur in the US over issues and laws that effect us all. The ability of our press and our citizens to openly disagree or support our government is amazing.
Another aspect is that America is almost always one of the first countries to help other countries when they are faced with disaster (in whatever form it takes). It's not just our government that helps, so many times it's also our citizens that step up and give to help those facing dire times. Our capacity to give a lending hand is well documented.
Then there is national pride - everyone has it (to some degree or another). Nothing wrong with that.
Now, if you want less crime, then try going someplace where the opinions and ambitions of the individual are suppressed in favor of the ruling party or class. You might be safer on the streets, but you may not be allowed on the streets for long.

It's part of the national psychology to think that way. They are raised that way and to be fair, the U.S. (if you are rich, white and Republican) is a great place to live.
Americans are always saying (as some of the posts here have said) that every nationality thinks that way but it's not true. Europeans think about their country quite objectively. The one that makes me laugh is when 'freedom' is cited as the reason why America is the best country in the world. Almost European countries have the same rights to freedom of speech, religion, the media as the U.S. does. We can't own a handgun, but then frankly, why the hell would we want to?
The other one is that we are all 'jealous'. I don't understand what of. No-one has ever explained that one.
otherworldtrader: we were a democracy before you were even discovered, you stupid wanker. Get a life.

True oportunity and freedom. Freedom to dissent, to ***** about our government without repercussion. We have a two hundred year history of freedom of religion, press, speech etc. The same could not be said of Germany, France, or Spain. Canada was until recently an English protectorite. Most of our system and even our own Imperialism is based on Great Britain. Our greater resources and ethnic diversity may be what makes us stronger than England.

answer: Because it is what we are taught to think... or should I say brainwashed into believing.
btw: I do not think that crime should play any part into the greatness of any country... especially since the laws are not the same. However, the fact that they have different laws is a factor into why they are better countries.

Because it is where we live and we are proud of where we live. If you are proud of where you are from obviously you think your country is the best. If you don't think your country is the best then you can't be complaining because we do. I am proud to be an American---that doesn't mean our country doesn't have faults---But There is no place on earth I would rather live and If that pisses you off so much so be it. But I AM HAPPY TO CALL MYSELF AN AMERICAN!
