fly wheel could be damaged. but more likely you need shims between your starter and block to ajust the starter to flywheel spacing.

Sheldon got it. The new starter was improperly shimmed. They usually use one design of starter for many different motors for efficiency's sake. So in order for the same starter to fit so many different motors they use "shim sets". Different motor, different shimset. I'd suggest taking it back to the mechanic and having the starter replaced and shimmed properly. The reason to insist on a new starter is that since you can hear it grinding, damage has already been done and the life of the starter had been significantly shortened by their oversight.

The ring gear on the flex plate may be worn down from stater gear.
Visual inspection may be required by removing the starter and looking at the ring gear.

id bet a dollar that the flywheel is damaged ( teeth are missing) since you have replaced the starter. that is a costly repair. especially on a front wheeldrive. good luck

More details, does it do it while the engine is turning over? Or does it start and then grind? Or does it grind and not start at all?
