None if you're skilled enough. 4) for most people, but some musicians will tell you they can tell a note exactly but can't work out the first 3 and use trial and error.

When you learn them, none of them involve trial and error.

I was looking for cut and try method of simplifying a square root, but its not there.

If I had to choose, I would say reading musical notes. Or maybe making music without the notes.

I'd say the answer is No.1. The others are precise and can be done in one step, whereas simplifying a fraction may need thought processes like "I wonder if the top and bottom are both divisible by 13 - let's try it."
