Of course it hurts, but every woman's level of pain is different as well as her ability to deal with pain. Also, certain types of labor hurt more than others. Typically induced labor is much more painful than labor that is allowed to proceed on it's own(doc could prob explain why if you ask him). By induced I mean any labor that requires the use of Pitocin or any other hormone to speed or regulate contractions. Some women don't get the choice on that though. Typically my labor will stall out after about 12 hours or so if I even go into labor before the baby is larger than I can safely deliver, so I have been induced every time. If you have to get induced or need Pitocin I would recommend the drugs. I have used epidural every time, but some women find the risks unacceptable. I have not had a c section (crossing fingers), but they give you pain medication before they start as it is a surgery. As far as recovery, for a vag delivery, as long as you can avoid an episiotomy your healing should be fairly fast, although you won't be able to sit down like you normally would for at least a week. I have a decent pain tolerance and I never needed more for pain than Tylenol, but if you are in a lot of pain they will offer you something stronger. C section recovery is a different story. I had a c section-like scar due to female surgery and I walked doubled over for almost a month. I did quite a bit of laying around though and I have heard nurses say that the more you move around the faster you will recover from a c section. Not that you have much of a choice. Your own personal discomforts quickly become background noise when you're dealing with your newborn's demands. Good Luck

well it can be depends on how you look at it. I did my 1st one all natural no drugs and 23 hours later she was born. The last one I had an epideral so it was great..piece of cake and recovery was even better.
I knew there was a precious reward after the agony so I didn't care.

nah. If you have the pain relief of an epidural, such as i did, no its not too bad. I had 3 hard contractions, they gave me my epidural, and i slept until it was time to have my daughter! :)
