My family is wanting a new cat or dog. we don't know which one to get? They say cats are better but dogs are more entertaining for a family pet.

First, you need to consider what is involved in caring for each one.
Cats:vaccines, neuter, declawing or not, indoor verses outdoor, litterboxes, sheading, grooming, etc
Dogs:vaccines, neuter, fenced yard, walking, training and obedience, etc.
Are you home most of the time, or do you spend many hours away? Do you have children? Are you active yourself? There are so many reasons to have either. I have both, and it is a myth that cats are easier to take care of. I also feel that they are somewhat equal in costs in the long run.
Ask your friends and relatives that have pets and do some reading on how to care for each. You should at least be able to get some idea on how each one would fit into your lifestyle.
They are both great pets in different ways and are both able to fill your life with joy. They are also both capable of being hard work causing you stress at times.
So, as far as I am concerned, you can't make a wrong choice here as long as you are a responsible caregiver to either one you choose.
Best of luck

It depends really..dogs require a lot of care and attention. So do cats, but not like dogs. Cats can be more independant and are often off doing their own thing. They sleep 16 hours out of the day when they are fully grown. So if you want an independant pet, go for a cat. If you want a pet that is loyal and relies a lot on you, get a dog.

Cats are very entertaining....All you have to do is give them a ball of string and they go to town.....you'll be very entertained....or put your hand under a blanket and move it around....they will pounce on the blanket trying to catch your hand....another thing is cats are affectionate when you want them to be, dogs on the other hand always demand you full attention which can be quite annoying. Cats clean themselves and dont have bad breath like dogs. Now i'm not saying dogs are bad pets, but I'd take a cat over a dog anyday! Good Luck on your decision!

Cats are unique in their own way just like dogs. But consider what kind of space you have . A yard for a dog? And which do you want to do--Pick up poop outside from the dog or clean a cat pan? Good luck.

Do you have a child or any young ones? If so a dog would help for protection and wont bite if their tail shall be pulled, also would be playful. But if you want more of a cuddly animal you should get a cat.

Alot of people say that cats are tough or think they are better than humans but not really they just need more time to base their relationship with people.

It depends on the animal. Get to know the personalities, and pick one that goes with your family regardless of what species it is!

For the record, I have had well over 20 cats in my lifetime, and only one of them was super antisocial.

Also I have had over 12 dogs, and I have had some that were VERY lazy and antisocial.

And I have had a bird who thinks he's a dog!

And I have a rat that thinks he's a cat!

And a fish that thinks he's a human.

It all depends on the individual personality.

Dogs are more likely to be active! Most dogs love to play with their owners and get great relastionships! Cats are more lazy, and like to scratch! If your wanting a large dog, get a loyal Golden retriever! If small, i would raise a chihuahua from the start! Their also pretty active. Dont get one thats to old already, it might bite! If you want a dog in the medium range, get a bouston terrier! They have small faces, but are active! Hope i helped!

I'm more of a dog person but cats are more managable (because of the litter box). Dogs need walking. Then again- I don't have "real" dogs, they're chiahuahuas. But I would get a dog. Have fun with your new pet!
