No, it can't. Nintendo only want to market the Wii as a console and not as an entertainment system. The Wii can't do HD, so it can't compete with the xbox 360 and PS3 in this area.

A Nintendo spokesperson has announced that the company plans to release a version of the console with DVD-Video playback capabilities in 2007. It is "more than a firmware upgrade," so we won't be able to get DVD capability through upgrades on the WiiConnect24 network.
