and yet still have a beautiful pond to look at when we are sitting in our backyard this summer.

Fence is the ticket - just keep slats close together and vertical so he /she can't climb over or slip between.

DO NOT USE A NET! This could be worse than nothing at all. Ever see a bird or fish in a net, they just get more tangled. A net could actually restrict a child and increase the chances or drowning.

I don't agree with removing something because it can be dangerous. Children need to learn to be careful - it helps them navigate life. As a society we are already being protected from too many things because of this attitude. A child that learns to be careful learns to accept responsibility for themselves and their actions.

I mean do we remove our stoves because a child might get burned, no, we each them it is hot. Do we cut down trees to stop children from climbing them? No, in fact we should encourage our kids to climb bigger and bigger trees ( if you know what I mean).

Kids will get hurt, we just need to minimize the damage to a safe level if we can.

I have a small pond and have the same concerns. My son loves the water and the Koi Fish! Of course supervision and an understanding and respect for the water is tops on my list, but I also plan on putting up a fence around it, similar to the ones they put around swimming pools, simple, tasteful..safe. Good luck!

Other than a fence (you can build one without requiring a gate) you will have to watch the child all the time while outdoors. As it gets older, it will find more ways to get in.
