With Oscars an under gravel filter is always good to have as a back-up. In addition an outside filter, Aqua-Clear 500 (?),or Bio Wheel with two wheels, would be a good choice. No matter which type of filter you choose, with Oscars it's good to have some sort of back-up system, because they will find a way to temporarily tear up or disable one or the other over time. Another thing with Oscars, find a way to protect the heater, they love to break the glass ones, and you, or the fish, can get a terrific (if not fatal shock). If I were setting up an Oscar tank I would get one of the new heaters with a stainless steel tube. Also they will out grow the 55 gallon tank very quickly so be thinking about a larger one! Oscars can be pretty messy, so over sized filters will help. Two different kinds will provide a little protection from a total collapse of the Nitrogen cycle. Good luck,Oscars are a lot of trouble and a lot of fun. PeeTee

it depends how many oscars you have in the tank because they get to be monsters i mean if i caught one when i was fishing, itd be a keeper.... lol the general rule of one inch of fish per gallon does not apply with oscars because of how aggressive they tend to be they need lots of space at for a 55 gallon i wouldnt put any more then 2

A canister filter large enough for your tank will be fine. Powerheads are good for under gravel filter systems as well as circulation.
