I know the answer may be obvious, but I'm not from here, and I'm not sure whether shopping centers stay open on this day. I know the bank will be closed, and I don't want to make the trip to the shopping center to find it closed!

Yes - it's mainly federal offices and some private offices that close.
post office, banks, etc

The only places closing are government offices like banks. All others will be open.

Most stores will be open--and having sales--as they do on President's Day, and other federal holidays.
