Yes it cost alot. I had a gas meter at a building that dosent use gas anymore and I had it totally removed by the gas company that cost nothing. But moving it over would have cost me $800. Electrical would be about $1500 to $2000. I used to be an electrician.

While you can do your own gas or electric repairs or alterations in your own home, you can't touch the meters. That's a job that only the authorized service people are allowed to do -to prevent people from altering them or bypassing them. (The dangers involved are really secondary to the theft of gas or electric, regardless of what they'll tell you. It can be dangerous if anything goes wrong, but THEY are concerned about their money.)
So yes, you'd have to arrange for somebody to come out and move the meter. You can save some money, though, by having things prepared and ready when they come, so they don't have to make a couple return trips, or spend their valuable time digging and rearranging your pipes. If the meter is sealed, don't break the seal. If it's not, or if there's a shut-off just beyond it that isn't sealed, turn it off and disconnect the pipe or cable on YOUR side of it. Relocate your pipes and/or conduit to the place where it's to be moved, and when the guy comes out, all he has to do is lengthen (or shorten) the supply lines and reconnect everything. If the supply lines are to be buried, it's a big help to dig the necessary trench beforehand too. And let him know that when he's done, you'll take care of filling that trench back in. This way, you are only paying for the time he takes to do the actual moving of the meter, and not all the additional stuff that you could do yourself. You're only paying them for the bare minimum needed.
Oh, and if you go this route, make sure you coordinate your work with theirs, so you aren't left with no service for a week!

I would have to say yes. Moving the electric meter you have to get the mains cable shortened or lengthened. We had ours moved about 10 feet last year and with the mains people and the local electrician it cost us nearly £1000. Get some quotes first then see if it's worth it. I have no regrets but it was expensive. Be warned the mains elictric side of it they don't come and look at the job just give you a written quote which you have to pay up front THEN they do the work! If you cancel without notice it costs a fortune!

My advice is it is not worth the fine if you get caught. I don't screw with my meters. The power company will replace your meter if they suspect anything. Your old meter is the best meter because it reads more slowly as it ages. Do the right thing shut off lights and use less power. I used to do it by the block in Chicago as a "favor" to the Alderman. If you promised to vote for the "right" guy I would come "fix" your meter. If not you had to pay for all the power you used. Both Electric and gas meters can be slowed down but I won't tell you how. By the way I know what kind of people Obama grew up with. Guess what I won't vote for Obama.

If you are in the UK, the gas and electricity meters are the property of the power supply company and you cannot touch them. You have to ask the company's if you need them to be moved and Yes, its expensive.
