Most substances will compact when they're cooled, and they'll obviously also get colder. Water is an exception, because it expands when it freezes. Typically, though, things get smaller when they get colder.

They don't expand--most substances get smaller as they cool. Things expand with heat--basically, the molecules get more excited and need more room to wiggle around. When they cool, the molecules are moving less, and don't need as much space.

Water is the most well known exception to this rule--since it expands when it freezes.

1. Get colder
2. Contract

Don't get excited about water/ice as this involves a change of state.
