A good idea, then a good script. Special effects are nice, but excellent ones are optional to a good story.

All good fiction is about relationships between the characters. Without that, you could have all of the spaceships you want and the story would suck.
Sci-fi, fantasy, and the like are all great genres, but they are window dressing. If you don't have a good view on the other side, why look out that window at all?

Well... I think that good fiction is the creation of a strange world. And this world needs to be soooo descriptive and so real that you believe it really does exist (Just as Harry Potter, Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings)
So create a whole new world with strange (though believable) things.

Believable plot - you should actually be able to believe that something like this can actually exist/happen
Excellent Special effects
Actors who can make you believe that special effects
A director with imagination and vision.
