London is a big place - you need to consider several things. Do you have a mortgage, or are you going to be renting? Renting is more expensive. Are you looking at a houseshare if you're renting or are you going to look for a flat on your own? the further out you live, the cheaper the rent, but the more your travel will cost you. There will also shortly come a time when you suddenly realise how much you hate public transport and how little time you want to spend on it - so the nearer you live to your work the better; also the shorter your journey the better in terms of not having to change tube lines and / or buses. A 10 - 15 minute walk is fine, but remember that it will take you longer during commuter times, due to increased traffic and the number of pedestrians.

27 k isn't bad, but you won't have much to spare. London can be a very lonely place - you will need to have enough to spare that you can go out once in a while; and have someone look after your sprog while you are.

Work out a weekly budget and you will see for yourself.

Good luck!

I live in south London and have done for years
27 is OK, however the nearer to the centre of London
the more you will pay its not a rule but more or less
that's the way it works
if you know anyone try to get a couple of days down here
or get the London papers, go online etc look around
you can pay as much as 90 a week here for a box room
flats are really pricey anywhere near the centre
you will need to commute, join the club
then you have children? that's also a deal
take the time to really chk on things and it will be ok
if you really want it

My son shared an absolutely gorgeous apartment out near the Oval cricket ground just on the South side of the river (with 2 other lads - all professionals. They were all paying £600 per month. He was only earning about £17000 at the time and found it very difficult, but managed only by limiting his unnecessary outgoings. He had to dip into his savings but as he was only there for a year, knew that it wasn't going to be forever.

£27000 sounds about right depending on the type of life you lead and where you intend to live (and if you want to live alone). My son found his apartment through an agency dealing only with professional people (no students), and it was worth it just to be able to use the toilet when I visited!!!

The main thing you will need to find (which he didn't have to worry about) is child care and I hear that IS expensive.

I wish you luck in your new life. XXX

I don't know what kind of a salary you would need as I have no idea how much kids cost!

But, I would not think that you could live on that. I earn 27k and I am a single person with no dependents, so it's fine for me but there's no way I could raise a child on my current salary.

Housing is so expensive that on my salary, there is no way I could possibly afford to live on my own (whether renting or buying) - I need to live in a share house with three other people. This is also due to very expensive costs associated with running the house such as very high council tax. And this is in a very average area, not somewhere posh.

maybe, it depends on ur out goings, break it down, include all ur debts, family outgoings, personal outgoings clothes, holidays etc morgage, or rent and if you are left with a quarter to spare then yes you are on the right tracks, the extra quarter allows you to save for ur self, and your childs future if need be, but if times are hard then you know u have enough. hope i have helped u!
