If I were to say "I think that you should go" is that bad as compared to "I think you should go".
I seem to get points taken off my papers because I use "that" too much.
Another example is "It is appropriate that you complete this job" versus "It is appropriate you complete this job".
I a from Canada and did not seem to have a problem there with its use..so i'm wondering if this is an American thing.

There is no such thing as using "that" too much, as that is the appropriate usage for those sentences. While is it "acceptable" by modern standards to leave "that" out of those sentences, it is not correct. Talk to your teacher about this and insist THAT your grade be changed on those papers. If they won't do it, then take it to their supervisor so THAT you can have the problem fixed.

hmm well I write papers all the time and I never get points off for using the word that. I guess your professor is just a hard-***( thats pretty much the nicest way I can say it)
