Hey Dude,
With most computer companies, we have hit rock bottom in the pricing scale.
What I have found is that a brand new model pc will start at $1000 today and gradually go down in price as new models come out every 2 to 3 months.
Another thing that happens is that a certain model will come with X hardware and software. As time goes on, they will not lower the price, but add more hardware and software to it for "free". This is the result of many things, mainly the idea that things eventually become cheaper.
It is my conspiracy belief that Dell and other companies really do not pay anything for hardware at all. They have a bunch of 'partner' companies that they have teamed up with to "crappify" your computer with their software. These companies pay Dell, HP, IBM, for the rights to install their software on your computer, in a trial mode. In return, these companies hope that you continue with their "pay for" service.
With the money that these "crappifier" companies pay, Dell is able to purchase the hardware, thus costing nothing for Dell. The price of the computer is 100% profit. That is why they are so cheap.
Nobody on the open market can put together a computer that Dell, HP, IBM put together for the same price. NOBODY! I can't even buy the components Dell has, from Dell, for myself and save money.

Dream on.
Even after the Dell 'rebates', that dance about, for 7, or 14 days, you still have to pay full price for all the TRIAL software applications!
In all the head to head comparisons with other computers, even Apple ones, with equivalent hardware (but, Macs come with the full load of PROFESSIONAL programs!), APPLE comes out almost $900 CHEAPER!!!
Dell keeps protesting that they want the results skewed in their favor, but, some media publishers remain honest.

Dell frequently has sales. It is after the Christmas rush, so they don't have a lot of sales. This is a good time to be able to buy.
