I'm hoping someone can settle a row with my boyfriend who has very little understanding of computers and doesn't believe me when I tell him our Pipex connection is broken.

I ran a command prompt and pinged our wireless router. i got 4 packets sent, 4 packets received. My interpretation of this is that the router is working fine in terms of the PC connecting to the router. However, when trying to ping the BBC website for example, the response we get is Ping request could not find host. Please check the name and try again. We got this response from a number of websites over a period of time.

It is my understanding that the problem lies with our internet connection and not my PC or the router. Can someone please clarify this so my boyfriend can see it with his own eyes because being that I am female, he doesn't think it's possible I might know the correct answer when he doesn't!

PS! I am able to post this question as I have my own wireless 3g internet provider.

Sounds right, if you can ping within your network, but not outside it, you have a problem with your internet connection. Try resetting your modem, renewing your IP address, and make sure you have DNS servers listed. And tell him that this guy on the internet said you were right.........LOL

May very well be your modem as opposed to the router, the router appears to be seeing the inside network but that doesn't verify the connection to the modem works properly. First plug a machine directly into the modem - if you can connect to Internet (and or run successful ping test) then the problem is that your router and modem aren't talking. If no luck then either the modem is bunk or highly unlikely but possible, your ISP is suffering issues

attempt this.. close down each and each and every of the computers. then the router,do a demanding reset of the router earlier un plugging it. this would nicely be carried out with information from finding the reset button and preserving it in for 30 sec with a paper clip or pen element. then un plug the modem. go away each and everything close down for a bout 5 min. then pulug in modem and go away for about 3 min. it is going to initialize. then restart router and allow it initialize. then initiate a pc and attempt to be certain connection. at the same time as all computers are appropriate then set up router protection. do not attempt engaged on numerous computers and be certain numerous issues mutually. it would want to actual get puzzling. desire it helps

Try tracert it will tell you where the problem lies,
eg tracert www.microsoft.com
If it cannot resolve the name its either
a DNS issue or there is no WAN connection
If it does resolve the name
then it seems like there is a routing problem (check you ISP)

make sure you type
ipconfig /flushdns
before trying tracert other wise it may use the LMHosts file on your PC and not try to resolve the name

Yes I would agree with your diagnosis - I get the same symptoms when my ISP is really busy
