Why do basketball hoops have nets?

so that it is easier for everyone to see if you made a basket.
number two reason is
so that the ball doesnt go running off since you swished it, and that takes all the joy off of your swish.
number three reason is
for fashion and doesnt it just feel great when you make that basket.. and the sound of the net.. to me.. thats the most important =]
