Probably games that you wont find at Wallmart lol. Games that make you think a little bit and form some strategy - Shogun, Puerto Rico, Tikal, Samurai or Settlers of Catan. They really are great games, just not known by the masses. Check them out (and over 2000 other games) at http://www.boardgamegeek.com

My personal favorite is the ancient asian board game of go. It's simpler to learn than chess but has many more layers of complexity. It also has a great handicapping system so people of two very different strengs can have a fun, challenging game with each other.
For fun with friends when we have more than two and/or I I'm the only go player I like Trivial Pursuit. There's also lots of other great games like Carcassonne and Settlers of Cataan.
Looney labs puts out plastic pyramid pieces that can be used for all sorts of games, some board games some not.
Also, there great card games out there that are lots of fun. Apples to Apples, Fluxx, Munchkin, and Elixir to name a few.
I don't care much for Monopoly. It's very random and can go on forever.

Chess, flow and Clue, are all high-quality video games, yet my prominent presently is Arkham Horror, an journey board recreation placed out with information from fantasy Flight video games, the position each and each and every of the gamers are on the same crew, cooperate, and attempt to conquer the game - not one yet another. that's slightly expensive ($50), however it delivers you with countless bang on your dollar. (the bottom recreation on my own weighs about 5 lbs.) There are presently 3 expansions out for it: The Dunwich Horror ($40), The Tomb of the darkish Pharoah ($20), and The King in Yellow ($20). A forth enlargement is due out somewhat quickly (Kingsport), and could probable also run round $40. it is truly a lengthy recreation (video games have a tendency to very last for 3 to 4 hours), however it holds pastime nicely, and is not in any respect the same recreation two times, truly with the expansions. I pretty propose this recreation. :) however, beware, you'll favor an pretty giant taking section in section (truly with the Dunwich Horror enlargement) to in good structure this on your table.

Backgammon.
With Chess, the smartest player wins 99.99% of the time. With Backgammon, the roll of the dice can destroy, even the best players strategy.
