I suggest buying multiple boxes. It's not like they will go stale or anything if you don't use them all that month. Get some heavy absorbency for days 1-2, and some regulars and lights for later days. Since you've never used them, start off by using the regular (maybe with a backup pad) until you know how often you need to change them and if you need to move up or down in absorbency
They make boxes that contain a variety of different flow types, but it's like Neapolitan ice cream: one flavor you will always dislike, and so you end up with three boxes containing that undesirable kind.

You won't use just one tampon for your whole period. We all start out heavy in the beginning and get lighter in a couple of days.
It will take a little trial and error for the first couple of months. You'll want to use the smallest tampon that controls your flow. You should be changing it every three hours or so. This is for health and hygiene purposes--it's very important.
You can wear one overnight if you put it in just before bed. I recommend wearing a pad, too, until you know how well it controls your flow while you sleep.
Read the instructions and warnings on the box when you get started.

There are regular sized tampons made by many different brands. Those will probably work. If not, as time goes on you will get to understand your body more and will you start to just "know" when to change them when you need to. I would recommend not using "super" tampons even if you think you might need it. Women think that because it's larger, they can leave it in longer and that can lead to a serious bacteria build up. It's always healthier to use regular tampons on your heavy days. Changing them is just something us women have to deal with. You'll get used to and one day you'll pray for menopause.

It's not good to use too high an absorbancy, so try out a regular one first, and if it's leaking after an hour or two try super and so on. As your period gets lighter, work down again. Once you've worked out what works you can probably stick to that regime.

Find a box that has a assortment of different sizes and experiment and find the size that is most comfortable for you. Sometimes, I use just a regular size and also use a light pad just for extra protection. Good luck-

they have tampons boxes that come with multiple sizes in one package its very convenient and then you can use whatever size best suits your need at that time.but if you have never used them before you may need to practice a little bit before you get which sizes best suit you at which times

I thinks it's Playtex that carries 3 sizes in one box. Super plus, super, and regular.

There are boxes that have both in them just for that reason. Just read the box carefully.
