When I go and turn on my computer it goes straight to BIOS. I can't get by this...do I have a trojan horse on my computer? How do I bypass this?

Thank you!

It's not likely to be a trojan. It's possible but not likely.

Don't you get any messages explaining why it's going to the bios? I've seen computers do it when the clock battery has run out so both the clock and the CMOS are void... but it tells you that the CMOS is invalid and the clock is saying Jan 1 1980. I've seen computers do it when the RAM doesn't match the expected value in CMOS... but I've only seen this happen with a message saying the RAM didn't match first. I've seen it happen on some computers when it tried and failed to find a hard disk that would boot (hard disk failure or MBR trashed), but again only after a message.

When it puts you into the bios update screens can you check & save the bios values / reboot the computer without a power on/off and get it to boot up normally? If you can it points to a flat clock battery. Or is that what you meant by 'can't get by'... that you can't do a save-and-reboot?

It may be a trashed BIOS... which could be a result of virus breaking the BIOS (a few do...) or just a symptom of hardware failure of your PC.

Try the following... (you might need your computer manual for this if you have to set jumpers to wipe the CMOS):
1) Unplug it from the wall outlet.
2) Take out the clock battery. It's probably a sort-of 1 dollar / 10pence sized coin battery or it may be a thing like a half mars bar size connected by wires to the motherboard
3) Leave it for 15 minutes.
4) Put the battery in
5) Power it up and see if it boots up normally. It'll probably complain of incorrect BIOS values though... and you will need to reset the BIOS back the way you like it eventually.

If you've got an odd computer you may have to do some fiddling with jumpers to reset the bios. The manual for the computer or the motherboard will tell you how and where.

First start simple. Run a virus scan on the computer, symantic is a very good virus scanner. If nothing comes from this than you can to using a restore disk. You will want to go through your computer, using CD's, external hards, and then go ahead and run the restore disk.
