There are three who have long been considered the best overall athletes; Gordie Howe, Jim Brown and the great Jim Thorpe. Thorpe played many sports and won at all of them. Played football until in his 50's, but then Gordie played hockey in the NFL in his 50's. I also saw Gordie hit softballs out of the park against the King and His Court, and play badmington against the world champion...he was a very very fine athlete. Thorpe would get my vote as the best single athlete to date. When you say sportsman, you open it to many other aspects besides athletics.
The outdoors, team sports, individual sports, even owners and officials could be considered great sportsmen. With team sports you have several positions so you would have to consider for instance...the best SS or the best running back or the best forward in basketball or the best goalie or forward , etc. in hockey.
There are too many possibilities to consider.

This question can be asked but who is ever going to be able to come up with the right anser . Everyone is going to have different views on this sort of question. I think a true sports woman or man is someone who does it out of pure interest and not wanting all the money at the end of the day ok its a job but why do they have to be payed so much isnt it unfair ok they have talent but most people have talent and there not all payed thousands a hour to kick a ball around. Not everyone will agree on this because we all have our own opintions but hopefully it gets you thinking you could have talent but it just hasnt been reconsised.
