It is not a slot. You should have a plug on the back for a networking cable and possibly a slot where you can plug in a wireless card on one side.

What do you mean by 'should'? You mean the shop told you it was broadband ready? Or you mean you want it to be broadband ready?

If the first are you sure it hasn't got the right connector? If you are using ethernet then it's an RJ45 (like a big 'phone jack with 8 wires in it). If you are using a USB broadband router then it's a USB connector. If it has neither then the shop were not telling the truth... but all laptops in the last few years have had one or both types of connector.

If you want it to be but it isn't... you need to buy an adapter for it. If it's got PCMCIA (cardbus is almost identical) buy a PCMCIA ethernet adapter... or a USB ethernet adapter if it hasn't got PCMCIA. If it's not got USB, buy a PCMCIA USB adapter. If it's not got USB or ethernet or PCMCIA then you'll struggle anyway because it's a very old laptop.
