and thanked you and sent you on your way or a cashier that greeted you, stared into your eyes, asked if you wanted to buy anything from the register area (this includes suggesting candy bars for the kids you might have with you, thus putting you in a situation with your kids if you didn't want to buy them candy), pushes extra items on you when you buy any electronic item (extended service plans, etc), and tries to push a credit card on you? How about when you are next in line, do you want to wait while the cashier goes through this 5 minute ritual or do you want them to finish with that customer quicker so you can get on your way?

I would rather have a cashier who was friendly and greeted me, then proceeded to ring my purchase(s) up quickly. I have worked in retail, and many retail owners train the cashiers to work with add-ons and encouraging other purchases and service plans as part of their job.

Many supervisors will issue spoken and or written warnings to cashiers that do not go through the whole add-on speech, so don't be too hard on the cashier; she or he is only doing what they are told to do.

Many years ago, while in an entry level retail situation, I was turned down for a raise as I refused to demand personal information such as phone numbers from cash customers. The company was saying that they were not using the information for anything, but were actually compiling lists to be sold to other retailers. Needless to say, I quickly looked for other employment and tendered my resignation. Have a good day.

Are you trying to tie all human behaviour down into tiny rules, subdivided and subsubdivided according to what the cashier says or doesn't say? Come on - if somebody greets you OF COURSE you greet them back. Simple as that. Apart from you, NOBODY goes around thinking: "If she says hello, I won't say hello back because it's the first time she said it. If she says it next time, maybe I'll respond. What can it mean if she (a) does or (b) doesn't say hi?" Now go and worry about something else, that matters.
