My ten gallon community tank had been set up for about four years when one of my spotted cory cats died. I replaced him with an albino Cory cat. The pet store didn't have a single snail in the tank (I know since it was my store). The pet store water never touched my tank...but I still got a snail infestation. Snails are great for your tank, and if you know anyone with pet aquatic turtles, they make a great snack (the snails for the turtles, I mean). I feed my snails to my turtles and my loaches in my large tank, but there are still anywhere from 10-20 snails in my tank at any given time.

To control but not completely get rid of them, sink a piece of romain lettuce into your tank and leave it there for several hours. the snails will go to the food. Remove the lettuce. You could add several pieces of lettuce in different spots to attract more snails. Don't be alarmed if your fish eat the lettuce, it's actually very good for them. Do not leave veggies in the tank for more than four hours, though no real damage will be done if you decide to leave it overnight when biological activity drops with the absence of light.

NEVER, EVER SMASH SNAILS. THEY WILL RELEASE EGGS AND MULTIPLY WORSE!

hope that helps!

The only way that I have had success with getting rid of snails is boiling EVERYTHING in your tank. Snails reproduce asexually, so they can be a pain. If you have a place to put all of your fish, then you can take all of the rocks and plants and boil them in a large stock pot. You will probably have to throw away any live plants that you have, if any. To prevent them from coming about, the next time you buy fish make sure that there are no "stow aways" in the bag. I wouldn't even recomend buying from a tank that appears to have snails.

*you CAN buy expensive snails that don't have such a reproductoin problem. They are cute and good at cleaning the walls of your tank. Don't confuse the two kinds though. Anything offered to you for free isn't worth it*

There are chemicals (Snail-away,for one) that will kill all of the snails in the tank, how ever, if there are lots of them, look out for an ammonia spike. Several thorough gravel cleanings will be needed.Baiting them out might help, but that will never completely rid your tank of them. If you have the right sort of fish, crushing them on the tank sides will keep the numbers down, but never completely clean then out,and sometimes a complete tear-down of the tank is only a temporary solution. Maybe you can find an accommodation somewhere in the middle of all this. Good luck. PeeTee

While snails can be a sign that a tank has been misskept, chances are they are just there because they can be. I wouldn't be so sure that you don't WANT them there, though. In my 55g, I had a serious snail infestation. I also had not a speck of algae. One day, I decided I was sick of looking at the snails, and brought home two yoyo loaches. The snails were gone in days, but pretty soon, algae started growing. I tried lots of different algae eating fish, but none of them were as thorough, or as hungry, apparently, as those darned snails.
If there is room in your tank for some more fish, you might consider small loaches (not CLOWN LOACHES unless your tank is 125g+ that's a very common newbie mistake) such as Yoyos/Pakistanis, Zebras, and Dwarfs. Just remember that as soon as the snails are gone, you will need to feed these fish!

I had the same problem with snails... The weird thing was is I didn't even have snails in my fish tank to begin with, I bought a plant tho from the petstore, you know a live plant, and after a week had bunches of little snails. I scooped them out with a net and got rid of them.

Try taking a small plate, put one or two Tabimin ( Tetra bottom feeder food ) in the centre, then place the plate in a convenient spot in your tank, turn off the lights and wait overnight or longer. Snails will crawl onto the plate making collecting them easier!
I've tried this and it works!! You can also buy snail killer at your fish store.

I have had this problem before. I got 2 snails and they mutiplied very very fast. You basically have to pick them out one by one. Then you have to take all you decorations out of your tank and wash them thoroughly because there are probably snail eggs all over them. They are the gel clear things. Then after you have pickedthem all out make sure to add fresh water aquarium salt to your tank to take care of the little babies you might can't see yet. It's sad,but it's what you have to do.It worked for me,and I haven't seen one back!

UH OH!! LOOK, THE THING WITH THE SNAILS IS THIS, NINE CHANCES OUT OF TEN YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE TO TEAR YOUR TANK APART!!!
SNAILS ARE VERY HARD TO GET RID OF, ALMOST LIKE PARASITES!! SOMETIMES YOU CAN FIND A SNAIL KILLER THAT WILL KILL THE SNAILS OFF, PERSONALLY i HAVE NEVER USED IT, I WORRY ABOUT ADVERSE EFFECTS. MY ADVICE IS THIS. TAKE APART THE TANK AND WASH EVERYTING WITH SUPER HOT WATER, BUT DON'T MAKE IT HOT ENOUGH TO WEAKEN THE SILICONE IN THE SEALS. i'D SAY 125-130 DEGREES. WASH THE FILTER AND EVERYTHING, HOSES DECORATIONS, PLANTS, ETC. START ALL OVER AGAIN.
UNFORTUNATELY, THIS IS NOT GOOD FOR YOUR FISH AT ALL, YOU WILL PROBABLY LOSE SOME, BUT SNAILS ARE VERY VERY HARD T GET RID OF AND THAT IS ONE OF THE FEW THINGS THAT I HAVE FOUND THAT WORKS!!
SORRY!!
