There used to be alot of them. A teenage boy in Europe cracked the code for use in creating a DVD player for Linux. He posted his DeCSS code on the net and several free programs were created such as DVD Decrypter and Smart Ripper. The boy was arrested for breaking International Copyright Laws, and many people involved with websites that have posted the codes or programs that allowed you to copy DVDs were arrested or sued. You can still find the programs online, but you download them at your own risk. It is Illegal for citizens of the US, Canada, and the European Union to download or possess any program that allows the user to circumvent copyright protection.

You're going to have problems finding freeware that'll decode DVD movies or "rip" them.
Most freeware software downloads, that were of any real use, have been removed from the internet due to the threat of lawsuit for copyright infringement and trial versions only support limited functionality.
Do a search for "DVD Ripper" to see and another for "DVD ripping reviews" to see what you can find.

I have had the same prob and have downloaded AVS DVD Player and it works a treat. If you ask Jeeves for free download of DVD players it should be in there. Thats what I did and I have been watching DVD's with no problem. Hope this helps.
