In addition to the advice above, if the infestation is in your kitchen, make sure that you treat the drains in your sink. Run plenty of hot water and the garbage disposal. Run a little bleach down there too. We had an infestation of fruit flies after visiting the Farmer's Market once, and I spent all day scrubbing down the kitchen after getting rid of all the bad fruit. Didn't treat the drains, and after work the next day, came home to a whole new batch of fruit flies (and had to repeat the process from the day before)!

The gnats are most likely coming from fruit you leave on the counters so you must be more careful about leaving fruit laying around. Clean the counter VERY GOOD and all the areas around it to get rid of any gnat eggs that might be hiding. Some people store their fruit in clear containers like cake dishes so the the little varmints can't get into the room off the fruit. You might want to change the place you buy your fruit. Good luck. Never let fruit just lay around at least not until you have gotten rid of the problems because they will just breed and make more gnats.

Leave two bowls or cups full of water in the room you have the pests. Put a little bit of vinegar in one, and a little bit of sugar in the other. Put a drop of dish soap in each.

Watch and see which one the bugs are attracted to, and discard the other one.

The bugs will be attracted to the water (either the vinegar water or the sugar water), but the dish soap will kill them.

Leave the water out for several weeks - rinsing out the bowl and refilling it as needed. Eventually, it will kill off all of the living bugs and the bugs that will hatch.

To get rid of them fill cup about 1/4 full of cider vinegar and place them where you have seen them. In about 1 week you will go back and check the cups and there will be loads in each one dead.
You are bring them in with over ripe fruit bananas are really good for this.

They lay their eggs in plant dirt. Get some bug spray for house hold plants.. and use it in the plant and in the dirt... this usually takes care of it. I had it once too. Came in on fruit.
