With very limited observation (i.e. sample size of less than a hundred), is there some underlying subconscious or social meaning to this or is this a personal preference ?

they were linked to the rebirth of nature, in spring, the revival of nature...

You failed to mention who these people are who have this fascination for frogs. As for the female gender - - - half of the world population of people, animals, birds, insects, fish, and all other types of animal life have this fascination. The other half is fascinated by the male gender.
