You should get a betta fish, they are very pretty and come in reds, purples, blues, and some other interesting colors. They can live in a fish bowl for sure. Some petsmart stores sell bettas in a very small "tank" about the size of a coffee mug, and pebbles for about 7 dollars. But you cannot put two or more bettas in one tank, because they are not friendly with eachother.

If by bowl you mean something in the range of 2-3 gallons, a betta might be alright, if you are willing to also buy a heater (set in the 76-80 degree Fahrenheit range), a thermometer, substrate, some silk or live plants, and a hidey-hole (with no sharp bits).
However, if you really want to keep a healthy, happy, beautiful betta, you should really consider getting a 5 or more gal tank. A Mini-Bow 5 kit would be wonderful example.
If your bowl is less than 2 gallons - I strongly suggest not putting anything in it. Yes, a betta can SURVIVE in a 1-2 gallon bowl, but it certainly will not THRIVE.
And PLEASE don't any of those blasted peace lilys on top. Bettas are surface breathers - putting in a plant that covers the entire surface of the water will suffocate your betta.

The only fish capable of living in a bowl is the betta because it is the only fish that has the labyrinth lung which allows it to breath from the surface. However, I do have to agree with skittles that this is still not the most ideal situation for a betta. Bettas are carnivores and don't eat plants. Bettas are tropical fish and do best at temps around 75 degrees F.

Everyone on here is saying betta. This is a horrible misconception. A betta needs a heater and a filter to truly be kept healthy. Yes they are kept in small bowls and little cups but if taken out of one of those little cups and put into a real aquarium the fish doesn't even really know how to swim because its never had to. You could be kept in a little closet your entire life if someone kept throwing in food and cleaning it out once in a while....but does that mean you should have to? Please don't keep your betta or any fish in a little bowl.

How small a bowl? Betta's are the best for smaller containers, but the difference in attitude between a lethargic, depressed vase kept fish and a Betta kept in 5 or more gallons is amazing. I've seen people comparing keeping fish in a bowl as the equivalent of keeping a mastiff in the bathroom. Yeah, they might live, but are they happy and healthy?

Like everyone's saying, bettas are pretty good for this application. I would like to add that a plant in the top of the bowl really helps keep the fish content (and alive) - I use a Peace Lily.

no fish should be kept in a fish bowl without a filter or heater
i know a bunch of people are gonna say betta
but these are TROPICAL and should have a heated TANK
How big is the fish bowl? You maybe could get away with a couple white clouds, but I still dont recommend it

Betta...
it is good to have two fishbowls...one that holds clean water that has had time to settle and be at the same temperature and is ready when the other bowl becomes a tiny bit murky.
Even better..if you can put in a small water filter.

Look for beta fish. They are usually blue in color and don't require a lot of care. Most come in their own little bowl.

a betta- they're easy to take care of and come in blue and purple. I have one and it has lived for the longest I've ever had a fish live.
