What about the dogs trained to help people with disabilities? The "seeing eye" dogs for the blind are the most well-known, but dogs are also trained to help people who are in wheel chairs, have epilepsy, and other conditions.

Also, what about dogs in the police force? They develop a very close bond with their law enforcement owner, sometimes jumping in front of him/her to protect the owner from a bullet.

i believe so - i have considered chimps 'snigger' and tease/ play, as well as parrots, like cockatoo's and lorikeets. i imagine Dolphins also play and snigger etc. Many animals do! there's no reason to believe that human's are the basically animals have have such emotional complexity. It would not inevitably require a large mind as those style of emotions/ emotions are modern-day in a small portion of the mind around the brainstem.

Why not look at how animals are sometimes brought to nursing homes and how these pets help to comfort the residents? Sometimes people who are old, tired and ill don't respond to much but light up when they see a cat or dog. There's something there.

Heck humans can't even bond with one another and you want them to bond to animals? check The Dog Whisperer on Discovery Channel he certainly has some sort of bond with different dog breeds amazing how he gets them to behave.
