Rivers run because their source is higher than sea level and gravity 'pulls' the water down. It is drainage on a massive scale. Whatever direction it runs is nothing more than a trick of the local geography that is allowing the water to make its way to sea level. After the New Madrid earthquake in 1811, the Mississippi briefly reversed its direction because the local area had been uplifted by the quake.

Rivers run in all directions in both hemispheres. The Mississippi has its mouth to the south of North America and it drains a huge area with rivers that have a southerly component. This might give the impression that rivers all flow south but they don't. Canada has many rivers which flow east, north and west and very few that run south.

In South America, the two great rivers, the Amazon and the Orinoco flow east while other rivers flow in all other directions.

The Nile River. Many major rivers flow South to North (most empty into the Arctic ocean), but most do so diagonally, like the Mackenzie, Ob, and Lena, all long major rivers. No major river other than the Nile flows in such a straight South-North course. The Nile flows into the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, not the Arctic, too. The only major river that comes close to such a direct South-North course is the Yenesi in Siberia.

Rivers do not generally run south. Rivers always run from higher altitudes to lower altitudes. In the united states there happens to be a significant coast that runs east west on the southern side of our country. Canada on the other hand has little or no southern coast. Rivers in canada that reach the coast have significant northern running sections or East-West running sections. The largest river in South America is the amazon and it runs to the east.
