Cecil Rhodes extracting mining rights from King Lobengula in 1888 and this territory becoming the country "Rhodesia" in 1895.

As Rhodesia, the white minority declaring independence from the UK in November 1965, when countries around them were becoming black African majorities.

In the last 5 years, I would say the suspension of Zimbabwe from the Commonwealth of Nations for human rights issues and vote-rigging.

The building of Great Zimbabwe would have to be one; I'd pick Cecil Rhodes' coercive extraction of mineral rights from the Ndebele as the other.

In the last five years, the major events have related to Mugabe's dictatorship, his various corrupt elections and repressions.
