The reason for this is that the heart pumps blood which brings oxygen to the parts of the body. And when you excersize, the body requires more oxygen, because the musles that are flexing need the oxygen.

The heart is the muscle that pumps blood throughout the body and exercise requires more oxygen and blood for the muscles which can only be achieved by an increase in heart rate.
