can you use a high temp rtv silicone gasket material to form a gasket between the oil burner and the furnace? wife threw the one for it out. or is there another material to use? won't be able to get one til probably tuesday and it';s cold

If the furnace has only 9% efficiency, replace it. Current furnaces are at least 80% efficient, some claim as high as 94%, but his is in a controlled laboratory. They gain efficiency by running the flue gases through more turns to extract as much heat from the burned fuel prior to exhausting. The gases have so much heat extracted that the waste condenses into liquid water and CO2 gas. Newer oil burners can also burn bio-diesel fuel.

Like some others have said I would use high temp silicone for a temporary fix until you have the right gasket. There are two types of high temp silicone sealants that i know off one is an orange color that is probably good for 600 degrees thre is another that is good for much higer temperature it is colored black like furnace cement. you may even be able to use furnace cement for the job for a temporary fix to get you out of a jam.

THE FURNACE IF IT IS GAS WOULD HOLD UP GOOD. OIL HEAT WOULD BE TOO HOT . I WORKED IN A LOCAL HARDWARE STORE IN THE 70S AND THEY CARRIED A ROLL OF ASBESTOS APPROX 16 INCHES WIDE AND ABOUT 12 FT UNROLLED. YOU MIGHT CHECK,

Get material from hardware store made of asbestos substitute. I don´t know what it is called but it is out there.

rtv will work fine. buy the proper gasket and keep it handy for the next time you have to pull the unit apart.
