I had this procedure preformed for each child I had, which was twice. It does not hurt at all. The only thing that you feel is a little pressure. There was no pain afterwards, as well. You lie down and an ultrasound is preformed while doing the procedure, to make sure that they get the needle in the correct spot without disturbing the fetus. I understand your apprehension. I would venture to say that most people feel a bit squeamish about needles, especially if they are big ones. I certainly felt that way, especially the first time around. Many medical procedures can cause that anxiety, especially when we don't really know what to expect. Try to relax. Deep breathing may help you reduce anxiety. You can also try closing your eyes and envision yourself in a beautiful place or think about something that makes you happy. Try not to focus on your fear. After it will be finished, you will say to yourself that it wasn't at all as bad as you thought it to be. Good luck and congratulations on the new life you are bringing to the world!

hi there.
i had a scan at 19 weeks showing a increased thickness on the neck of 5.2-5.6mm.
the next day my midwife wanted me to have a appointment at the hospital.
they pushed me into having a amniocentesis and in the eng i did.
they scanned me cleaned me tummy, put the needle in this didnt hurt one bit it pinched a little when it came out the.
i saw my baby swallowing the fluid on the scan and opening and closeing its mouth was kinda kool.
but then i started getting pains and 6 days latter i gave birth to a 20week baby girl due 2 a infection in the placenter caused by the amnio. so just remember this procedure is risky and can cause problems very low chance 1/200 but it does happen.
i know.
good luck to you both.

Good Luck... I considered having it done but decided against it. I'm too scared to have a needle go into my tummy! Hope everything goes okay.

Just remain calm, hold someone's hand, do not watch them doing the procedure. It only lastes for about 2 minutes. You will hurt afterwards a bit but not much.
Really it dosen't hurt while they are doing it.

Why are you getting this test done? They wanted me to get one with my third they told me that she could be retarded but that there was nothing that they could do for her while she was in me so than why get the test done unless you can do something for the baby before he or she is born. Needless to say there was nothing wrong with my daughter she is 7 years old and perfect.
