Well, personally, I know I would be lost without one, as spinning fiber is what I do for a living. As a people I cannot imagine that we would not have at some point in our history figured out a way to spin fibers into a stronger, more durable substance. But let's say for the sake of argument that we hadn't. The next logical solution would be felt. We would take wool, agitate it in hot water, shock it with cold water and make felt which we would then cut into garments the size and shape we need them to be. Then we would have to sew them together somehow, but no thread, so we would either have to use substances found in nature to join the pieces (reeds, sisal, etc) or felt the pieces together, again with more felting.
Obviously not very practical. Thank goodness we figured out the spindle/spinning wheel thing!
