That totally depends on your situation and home. If you have plenty of space for a really, really big cage, are around lots during the day, don't mind spending more time cleaning them and won't object to the loud squeaking noises they make, a guinea pig may be a good pet for you.
If your home is smaller, or you are around the house and up a bit more during the night, as they are nocturnal, and should not be disturbed during the day, or if the noises and mess may be a problem, a hamster may suit better.
In either case, please be generous in the living accomodation you provide for them. Most of the cages on offer for smallies are way, way too small to fulfill their requirements. A guinea pig really shouldn't be expected to spend long periods in a space less than 6' * 6'. A hamster can cope in less floor area provided the cage has lots of levels he can climb to climb to and a wheel to run on, but I would not be happy with less than 3' * 2' * 3' as a bare minimum.
Either pet also needs to have some sort of shelter in the cage where they can sleep in privacy, with plenty of soft beddiing, and plenty to chew, be it would, cardboard or mineral rocks, and either fresh grass or hay and a certain amount of fresh vegetables for a piggy, although one must be very careful to watch their sugar and vitamin C intake, as piggies are prone to diabetes and can't tolerate much vitamin C.
Both hamsters and piggies will be very shy at first, so be patient and gentle and don't force too much contact until they are used to you.
Good luck with your pet, whichever you choose.

It depends on what you're getting the pet for. If you want to watch it for entertainment, hamsters are better since they tunnel more. If you actually want the pet to handle and would like it to have more of a personality, the guinea pig is better. Guinea pigs don't bite nearly as much making handling easier and can be much more personable. If children are involved, definitely a guinea pig.

Hamsters smell less. You know you have a Guinea Pig. There's no mistaking the smell.
